The Chair (2000)
single channel video and sound installation

The artist has a knife in his hand and is waving it through the air. The sound effects accompanying the movement are a performance produced by a microphone. What is being depicted in the flood of sound -a man sculpting air, or a man torturing an invisible person?

This work was the outcome of spending three days in an empty studio with just one chair. From within me, I discovered the possibilities in video art in which two opposing images are featured together. (from Meiro Koizumi, 'The Chair - Koizumi Meiro', in: Koizumi Meiro, exh.cat.
