New Matsushima (2022)
drawing on aluminum (aluminum plate, water-based pigment marker, oil-based lacquer), aluminum frame
55×73×2.7㎝

New Matsushima is the name of the cruise ship company on which I boarded during my visit to Matsushima, Miyagi. The first time I saw Matsushima on the boat, the edges of the island had been eroded by the waves and sea breezes over the years, and it looked less vivid than the 100-years-old photo postcards I had seen before my visit. While imagining the sharp landscape that Matsuo Basho saw more than 330years ago, I drew the future pastoral landscape on a permanent aluminum plate, referring to the 100-year-old postcards and the plate painting of old Imari that shows the perfection of the seaside landscape, without denying such changes in the landscape over time.
